Established as California's capital city in 1854, Sacramento is the seventh most populous city in the state of California. State capital, county seat, marketing center and transportation nexus, Sacramento has more to offer than just another field trip.
Full of historical significance, Sacramento boasts its own historical monument sites. Sutter's Fort, built by John Sutter in the 19th century, stands as a testament to the old pioneer and Gold Rush days. Old Sacramento is a four block cobble-stoned section of the city, which was a commercial district during the time of the Gold Rush. It is now redeveloped into museums, restaurants and shops that preserve the character and historical charm of 19th century Sacramento. The California State Railroad Museum depicts the development of railroad travel, including 21 restored locomotives and train cars, and more than 40 interactive exhibits. Also housed in the city of Sacramento is the Governor's Mansion State Historic Park and the city's Historic Paddle wheeler, the "Spirit of Sacramento."
The Governor's Mansion features furnishings and personal items of former California governors. The last governor to live at the mansion was Ronald Regan, and since then it's been a historic landmark for the state of California. The "Spirit of Sacramento" is a restored paddle boat from Sacramento's aquatic history that has been converted into a restaurant, as well as conducts 1-hour sightseeing tours.
If you're looking for some splashin' fun, go to Raging Waters, Sacramento! It has more than 25 rides and slides for your aquatic enjoyment. This water park has dual racing slides, a wading pool, a river tube ride, a wave pool, and several other wet spills and thrills for the whole family.
Feeling like a walk on the wild side? The Sacramento Zoo has plenty of animals to suit your needs. Sumatran tigers, red pandas, lions, zebras, chimpanzees, as well as a reptile house and so much more await you. Lions, and tigers, and bears, oh my!
Whether you come to visit the State Capitol building to learn more about the California legislature, come on a historic expedition, or just want to hang out at the water park, Sacramento has it all!
